June 16, 2017
Dear friends and stakeholders,
Today, we are announcing a big change that will affect air travel in Labrador.
Along with our indigenous partner, Innu Development Limited Partnership, and PAL Airlines, we have formed a new partnership. Air Borealis will begin operations on June 16, 2017.
You have been friends and supporters of Air Labrador for seven decades. For the past 5 years, Nunatsiavut Beneficiaries have been majority owners. Every day, we have endeavoured to deliver service that you can depend on. And we shared your pride that the Beneficiaries of Nunatsiavut were majority owners of Air Labrador. However, the economics of competing in a market with just a few thousand potential customers threatened the sustainability of the service. The best way forward is this new partnership.
We know you have many questions. Chief among them will be questions about safety, service, price, and control over decision-making.
With respect to price, we believe our partnership in Air Borealis will keep costs down, and return profits to NGC. A healthy and sustainable balance sheet is the best protection against higher prices.
Service. Not only do we plan to continue service to all of our current destinations in Labrador, we are introducing a new midday flight.
Safety will continue to be our top priority. Many of the people who have been servicing and maintaining our fleet are now employed by Air Borealis. They will bring the same care and attention to ensuring that you and your loved ones get safely to your destination.
With respect to decision-making at Air Borealis, each partner has one-third representation on the Board of Directors. Major decisions must have the consent of all three partners, including NGC.
We have created a series of frequently asked questions, and posted them on our website at ngc-ng.ca. We invite you to read them. Please get in touch if you need more information.
Thank you for your support of Air Labrador. We look forward to serving you on Air Borealis.
