Summary: The Project Director at Protein North reports directly to the Protein North Board of Directors and is the executive in charge of leading Protein North into the forefront of the sealing industry. The ideal candidate will be responsible for establishing and executing business practices for Protein North from the infancy stage of the company. 

The Project Director provides leadership, strategically manages risk, monitors finance, and ensures that deliverables meet schedule requirements for Protein North’s business within the communities of Labrador. 

The Project Director plans, directs, and coordinates the company’s activities to ensure that the goals and objectives are accomplished within the prescribed time frame and funding parameters by performing the following duties personally or through subordinates. The Project Director is also responsible for creating annual budgets and reporting the financial status of Protein North to NGC’s CEO and the Board of Directors.    

Responsibilities:

  • Leading all aspects of Protein North in order to develop and maintain the organization as a leading Inuit owned company in Labrador;
  • Developing company framework and business practices through initial use of Consultants for harvesting seals and product production for health, food, and crafts/clothing);
  • Conducting marketing studies with the assistance of Consultants to identify areas of opportunity and focus for the business;
  • Writing and submitting proposals to obtain contracts and funding;
  • Performing supervisory and project management responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies, industry best practices, and as established by any applicable laws and bylaws;
  • Coordinating and lobbying activities with activities of government regulatory or other governmental agencies;
  • Providing leadership, strategically managing risk, and monitoring finances for successful implementation of projects and execution of work;
  • Creating development plans and forecasting sales targets and growth projections. Identifying market opportunities through meetings, networking and other channels;
  • Establishing company objectives and performance standards within boundaries of company policy and contract specifications;
  • Developing operational plans for company and projects. Monitoring and reporting on milestones;
  • Ensuring business and products deliver specified results and meet quality expectations;
  • Updating clients, stakeholders and executives with reports on progress and performance;
  • Prepares reports, recommendations, briefing notes, an annual budget, and other documents as required;
  • Manages relationships with various partners/vendors of Protein North;
  • Attends various high-level meetings including Executive Face-to-Face meetings, and meetings with NGC’s Board of Directors;
  • Continuously analyzes the business’s performance and provides updates to the President & CEO of NGC;

Performs other duties requested by the by the CEO as required;

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Fisheries Science, Marine, Business Admin or a related field;
  • Project Management certification preferred;
  • In lieu of a post-secondary degree a relevant experience would be considered;
  • 5+ years of related work experience in a senior management role within the seal/fishing/marine industry or within an related role;
  • Experience with building, shaping and operating a business from early stages. 
  • Strong leadership capabilities;
  • Proven ability to write high level business reports;

Assets:

  • Proficiency in MS Office software;
  • Fluency in both written and oral Inuktitut 
  • Possess a valid driver’s license;
  • Ability to supervise people in a positive and collaborative manner;
